Dear Friends:
When a referral is made to me by a hospital LC, I call her (it is usually
a her) twice. Once to thank her for the referral and tell her when I will be
seeing the mother/baby. And second, about a week or two later, to tell her
what happened and how things are going. I may even call a third time, when
the mother is discharged from my care.
Hospital LCs rarely get to know what happened after the dyad goes home.
When I give her information about what (and who) was helpful during the
hospital stay, the hospital LC is encouraged and knows that her work is
appreciated. Good communication is as much a part of education as giving
information.
    Warmly,
Nikki Lee RN, MSN, Mother of 2, IBCLC, CIMI, CSTP
