Lactnetters,
I know that this has been discussed at at least short length before. It
keeps coming up at my institution. In fact someone told a mother that I
didn't know what I was talking about...
Sometimes babies void urine that is a brick red color in the first few
days. Dr. Newman (in his book) says no one knows for certain what it
is...but he does not equate it with dehydration. Many nurses and few peds
here think it does and will go the length to make sure that these babies get
supplemented. Drives me crazy. An NNP here thinks it's 'nothing' to worry
about.
It seems that usually it is BF babies that void this urine and it happens
once, I believe. Sometimes it's called uric acid crystals or brick-dust.
I've looked in the Auerbach, Lawrence texts, The Answer Book and a couple
other books. Dr. Newman is the only one that addresses it (at least by any
name I can come up with). I've also looked in the archives without finding
anything. Anyone know of what it is or why it happens, or what to call
it(!)? Help!
Thanks for the help. Betsy Wells-Gephart RN, IBCLC
