Jodine posted an article on obesity and lack of breastfeeding by Kim
Severson. Two aspects of the article prompt comment:

1. The wording "those who were breast-fed had a 30 percent reduction > in
obesity rates" presents the (poor) health outcomes of formula feeding as
the norm against which the (biologically normal) health outcomes of
breastfeeding are measured. When health outcomes are measured
(appropriately) against the biological norm of breastfeeding, it is clear
that formula feeding increases the risk obesity.
2. The wording " breast-feeding is emerging as a simple but apparently
effective > weapon." remarkably misrepresents the fundamental nurturing
nature of breastfeeding while also failing to recognize the inherent power
of that nurturing. No violent metaphors are needed to convey the power of
breastfeeding.

Back to vitamin D,

Cynthia
