Dear Friends:

I used to work at Booth Maternity Hospital, the last of its kind in the US, a hospital only for birth. (It died January 27, 1989, an early casulty of corporate medicine). Many nurses reported letdown sensations while working with new mothers; this was most intense at the beginning of employment for me. Some nurses even report that some milk came back.

Could it be that the hormonal?communication is similar to that of pheromones, sent via the air and picked up by olfactory sensors? Is it an energetic communication, communicated in some other way? Does nursing a baby change one's brain to respond just by being in the presence of new mothers?

When I teach about MER in classes, my breasts will often wake up and remind me about let-down!
warmly,
Nikki Lee
