When I suggested a flow at the breast mom said she "doesn't want the breast
associated with food"

Wow! That's a switch! Usually, people *only* associate breastfeeding with
food, and not with comfort or attachment or any other non-tangible thing. I
recently saw a mother who, after breastfeeding the baby to sleep, proceeded
to wake him up, whereupon he rooted again, so we put him back to the breast
where he quickly fell asleep. She awakened him again and he rooted, and all
the while I'm thinking and suggesting (and trying very hard not to do it for
her!) put him on your shoulder or cuddle him to get him off to a deeper
sleep... and so we went for 3 cycles. Each time, she'd wonder if the baby
was hungry, and I was thinking ...duh, you woke him up! He wants to sleep,
so of course he'll root. Finally, it came out that she was following the
baby whisperer and not wanting the baby to nurse to sleep, so she was
purposely waking the baby up each time he fell asleep at the breast. I
explained about the release of oxytocin causing drowsiness and this happens
to both mom and baby with breastfeeding, so baby can't help it! Mother
Nature designed it to work this way! But I was thinking, you can't have it
both ways. Either he's awake and he roots or he falls contentedly asleep.
Why do women want things to work differently than they just naturally do?
As the old commercial goes, "You can't fool Mother Nature!" I wish we
didn't also have to contend with this nonsense!
