I've known many mothers who got back to previous milk production and full
breastfeeding post gallbladder surgery, including several mothers of twins.
However, most had an initial, short-term drop, which I find seems fairly common
immediately after just about any type of major surgery. I wonder if the issue is
the gallbladder or in this case the delay in post-op direct breastfeeding or
pumping (on top of the body's other increased needs post op)? The mothers who
call me in advance usually have worked something out with their docs so that
there is no more than a few hours from last breastfeeding or pumping to post-op
breastfeeding or pumping, depending on mother being in stable condition
post-op...

My advice to this mother is to take her baby to bed for a round-the-clock
babymoon for several days -- lots of skin contact and frequent breastfeeding.
Seems to work for most.

Karen
