Hello, All: I agree wholeheartedly with Nikki. I see this all the time in
our brstfdg moms - those that do a lot of SSC learn to nurse much faster
and much more easily than moms who are doing the same, but with baby/self
clothed. Our hospital is the only one in the area that I'm aware of which
has a formal SSC policy/procedure on the Mother-Baby unit, as well as our
NICU. ALL parents are encouraged to do SSC as soon as possible after
delivery and for as often and as long as they like thruout their stay. It
doesn't take long for the parents to buy into SSC. Many of the nurses are
becoming convinced. Their main concern continues to be "cold babies".
There has been a decrease, tho, in babies being put back under warmers for
being cold. At a recent staff meeting the nurses themselves finally asked
for inservicing on SSC/attachment parenting. As one nurse put it - "I
think we need to know this". I do have a powerpoint presentation that they
will get towards the end of the year as part of their annual mandatory
brstfdg competencies.
We also include in the brstfdg packet each new mother receives on the unit,
a pamphlet describing SSC, its benefits to both mom/dad and baby, and how
to do it. A similar separate pamphlet is given to SCN parents.
Inpatient brstfdg management is slowing becoming easier as we empower the
parents thru SSC. Now...to convince the peds that SSC works!
