Sandra,
Our hospital has not had NPO orders for many years. We also do not use sugar
water for any feedings. All breastfed babies are encouraged to be fed
immediately after birth. Bottle-fed babies get a few sips of H20 prior to
getting their first formula feed within the first few hours of life. If blood
sugar is low, they will get fed in 1-2 hrs of birth. We are now doing glucose
testing only on certain babies (eg. sga, lga, gest. diabetic mom or
symptomatic baby). We are not "baby-friendly" and we are still working on
being totally "mother-baby care".
