Diane, I remembered hearing a speaker on sore nipples at one of the ILCA
conferences talk about using Saran Wrap, and (unbelievably) I was able
to find my notes. Dr. M. Shirley Gross from the Edmonton Breastfeeding
Clinic gave a talk at the 1999 conference on "Initial Nipple Damage in
the Breastfeeding Woman." At least at that time, she was using lanolin
on damaged nipples with Saran Wrap over it to keep the lanolin in
contact with the nipple. She also used a saline gel called "Normlgel"
covered with Saran Wrap rather than the hydrogel dressings that were out
at that time. I'm pretty sure it was just at that conference that the
original Soothies (before they were called "Soothies") became available,
so when she gave that talk they had not been in use. Be sure and let us
know how the mom thinks the Soothie compares to the Saran Wrap! I was
intrigued by the idea at the time, but quickly started using Soothies
and never tried plain old lanolin and Saran Wrap. (Soothies were WAY
cheaper when they first came out and were "ComfortGel.")
