Dear Lactnet Friends:

A lovely question. And yes, breastfeeding is more beneficial than
bottle-feeding human milk, for both mothers and babies.

1) "
Research has shown that breastfeeding directly correlates with a positive
mood in mothers. One study examined the effects of breastfeeding and
bottle-feeding on maternal mood and stress. After breastfeeding, the
mothers in the study were found to have both a reduction in perceived
stress and a more positive mood. In contrast, after bottle-feeding, mothers
were found to have an increase in negative feelings. The researchers
suggested that the higher levels of oxytocin released by breastfeeding may
contribute to both reduction in stress and better mood (Mezzacappa & Katkin
2002).

2)
"
CONCLUSIONS:

Modes of infant feeding are associated with asthma development. Direct
breastfeeding is most protective compared with formula feeding; indirect
breast milk confers intermediate protection. Policies that facilitate and
promote direct breastfeeding could have impact on the primary prevention of
asthma."

3) Mothers are more likely to continue pumping and/or breastfeeding when
their babies go to breast in the NICU:

a) "
Significant associations were found between first oral feeding at breast
and infant receiving any breast milk at discharge. “

b)
“The more times premies go to breast, the more neurological connections
they make.”

The more likely she’ll be providing milk for her baby at time of discharge.

“Direct breast-feeding in the neonatal intensive care unit: is it
important?”

4) And then there are all the benefits of skin to skin that occur during
breastfeeding: better temperatures, better oxygen saturations, calmer baby
and mamma.

warmly,
