I don't know of any handout and I wanted to ask why mothers over 40 would be a group by themselves.

I was an older mom when I had my kids and heard from another older mom that it was harder for us oldies to breastfeed. I researched the matter, but couldn't find anything in the literature (other than anecdotal evidence from LLL) that age in itself had any impact on lactation (with the exclusion of other factors for moms > 40).

I found this in a 2007 study:

"Although advanced maternal age has been associated with breastfeeding (2,4,5–8,11,12), in our study this association was not confirmed." (Risk factors related to intention to breastfeed, early weaning and suboptimal duration of breastfeeding, Fani Ladomenou, Anthony Kafatos and Emmanouil Galanakis). None of the sourced literature focused on whether age *in itself * was a risk factor.

Since older moms are over-represented in "lactational risk groups" if you will - IVF, c/section etc., it wouldn't be far-fetched to assume that the above mentioned association in the literature is in connection with that fact.

If anyone has research saying otherwise, I would love to see it.

I hope you don't mind my "rant", it's just that the attitude of the medical establishment to my pregnancies (giving me a hard time choosing a midwife over an OB who specializes in high risk pregnancies, suggesting countless ultrasounds in the last trimester, even though my pregnancies were all uneventful) already made me a bit insecure, hearing that my age might impact my ability to make enough milk was needless to say not helpful.

So I would be very careful to put a women over 40 automatically in a category that needs specific support, without her having any of the known risk factors. And if she does, she would need exactly the same support that a younger woman would.
