someone HAS to tell these new mothers the truth, that
formula is
a drug, it has it's uses but it's use is not as a substitute for
breastmilk when breastmilk
is readily available and it does have side effects like any other drug.
i got a much deserved pedicure today and was flipping through a mainstream
parenting mag. i don't work in a hospital setting so never really see formula. i
also subscribe to mothering, compleat mother and green tit - never seen a
formula ad in any of those yet! many of the trainings, forums, discussion groups
and even bulletin boards i participate in state that 'even formula advertising
and containers must state that bfing is best'. cold comfort, i always
thought, but better than nothing.
so imagine my dismay to see 2 ads in this mag today. they were for enfamil
and isomil. one was called 'advance' and one was called 'lipil'. i can't recall
which one now, but the ad basically said, "while bfing is RECOMMENDED, ask
your ped about our formula, it's been their choice for 100 yrs." it went on to
say that it now contains ingredients found in breastmilk and had a checklist
for what this formula can do for your baby. it said - "brain development like
breastmilk provides - yes" "eye development like breastmilk provides - yes" and
one other thing i can't remember. the other ad was similar but actually named
their competitor's product as having less of one ingredient.
anyway, i'm probably one of the only ones on this list naive enough not to
have known ffing companies don't have to state 'breast is best'...but i am very
disheartened as to how to overcome ads like this in trying to convince moms
breast really IS best. i mean, now it's basically going to be my word against a
big glossy ad w/ the statement in black and white that bfing is just
*recommended*. i mean, it's *recommended* that we floss and brush after every meal,
too. @@ i used to think, 'well, hearing breast is best on formula would be enough
to convince me that was what my babies would be getting!" but now i see moms
are NOT hearing breast is best!! ugh, why can't we have a nice big glossy mag
to show moms w/ checklists about how bfing is better? :::sigh::: i know, i
know - b/c no one is making billions of dollars off bfing moms. i'm off to drown
my sorrows in some chocolate and jump back into the fray tomorrow.
