Dear Friends:
Mothers with gastric bypass are given supplemental vitamins that they
have to take the rest of their lives, because they have lost some essential parts
of their GI tracts.
There is one case report (in the great new book Case Studies in
Breastfeeding, by Cadwell and Turner-Maffei) of a baby with slowed weight gain because
the mother had stopped taking those supplements; this didn't show up until
the baby was about 3 months old. The mother had thought the prenatal vitamins
were sufficient; her OB told her she didn't need to take the prenatal vitamins
anymore at her postpartum checkup, so she stopped taking them. And she wasn't
taking the supplements she needed from the gastric bypass either.
There are two case reports of this:
      1) Pedatrics 86(5):777-778; 1990. ( Failure of a nursing infant to
thrive after the mother's gastric bypass for morbid obesity) 2)
Pediatric Hemtal.Oncol.11(3):311-8; 1994 (Nutritional Vit B-12 deficiency in a
breastfed infant following maternal gastric bypass)
    warmly,
