If the facts are correct and this is a two year old (I know some children
don't get their incisors until age one), or even if it is a one y. o., a
child of this age can be talked to and reasoned with. The mother can choose
to tell the child that when s/he nurses mom's breast feels funny and that she
needs her to open her mouth wide (and demonstrate by opening her own) and
then to nurse. This usually takes care of it. In fact, it can be pretty
funny because I've seen two years olds wanting to nurse sit in mom's lap and
the open wide, really exaggerating the 'wide', and then carefully latch-on.
If the toddler slips back, just ask to stop and latch on again. As
toddlers eat more and more solids and take more liquids from other containers
they don't seem to nurse quite the same way so many times this discussion is
all that is needed.
