I attended a birth as a doula last night in a hospital whose strict policy
was that all their babies had to go to the nursery and have a bottle of
glucose water before they were allowed to breastfeed, to make sure they
could swallow well. According to the Breastfeeding Answer Book, there are
other ways to check for this, but the book doesn't list them. Can someone
please let me know what they are and/or can someone provide me with the
research that shows this use of glucose water bottles is an unnecessary and
potentially harmful policy?

Thanks,
Julie, LLLL in NJ, CD (DONA)
