YES! I also have a mother with a very similar situation. Both she and her doc -
also an infectious disease specialist - are now thinking that this is a
non-candidiasis form of yeast. So far, he has not been able to culture it from her
nipples, and is reluctant to prescribe a medication without a diagnosis. Diflucan,
gv, and nystatin were useless. She and her baby have tried just about everything,
including dietary changes, vinegar in the laundry, etc., etc. I shared Pat Gima's
comprehensive list of suggestions with her and she followed them all faithfully.
She is determined to continue nursing, but the pain is wearing her out. Please -
any suggestions?

>I'm looking for advice/suggestions for a mom who has battled a ductal
yeast infection for several months. Started out as continued sore
nipples when baby was 5 weeks. The OB was unwilling to prescribe
Fluconazole. Tried OTC products. Had a recurrence of sore
nipples/burning pain and exquisite tenderness around areola on Left. To
make long story short ended up seeing a Breast Surgeon (baby at 5
months) who prescribed the Fluconazole after she had bleeding from the
nipple. Ultrasound of the breast was neg. for any abscesses or
masses. After total of 21 days of Fluconazole 200mg/daily (with
complete resolution of symptoms) has recurrence of pain in 1 breast.
Struggling to help her breastfeed comfortably. She most recently has
seen an infectious disease MD who suggested stopping nursing and didn't
think further Fluconazole would be beneficial. Culture of milk did not
grow out anything. Mom does not want to discontinue breastfeeding. Has
anyone else ever seen a case like this? Any suggestions?

Thanks so much for any input.
