Catherine, how fascinating that you mentioned velopharyngeal insufficiency!
We have adopted our son Daniel, age 4, through a disruption of a Hong Kong
adoption, and he has DiGeorge Syndrome (mildly affected). One aspect of the
syndrome he does have is this! He swishes all liquids around and around in
his mouth (and it is NOT good what it does to his eye teeth). We have
wondered what he was like to feed as a baby. It also affects his speech. He
says all vowels, but most consonants, particularly the "plosive" ones like
"p" for ex, vanish! His speech therapist wants to schedule a swallowing
study after the holidays.
I guess the tie-in to bf is that the genetecist told us that it is far more
common than thought, and that many cases of cleft palate, "hidden" clefts,
and velopharyngeal insufficiency are caused by DiGeorge Syndrome (which is a
microdeletion on the long arm of the 22nd chromosome). We've only had Dan
for about a year, and I often look into those sweet brown eyes and wish I'd
had him from birth, but I'll bet he would have been a tremendous challenge
to breastfeed. Has anyone worked with a baby with DiGeorge?
