My letter to the editor:
The title of Bonnie Henry's column in the Tucson Region section on
9.7.05 (When Mother's Milk is Poison) is misleading and irresponsible.
ANY milk is indigestible by infants with galactosemia, which the column
clearly states. Many inborn errors of metabolism like galactosemia
exist, they do not render normal foods poison, they merely cause an
inability to break them down, resulting in damaging byproducts of the
abnormal metabolism. I understand the desire to have provocative
headlines that drive readership, but as the risks of many chronic
deseases are increased by NOT breastfeeding (obesity, diabetes, asthma,
heart disease, several cancers), it is reprehensible to call human milk
poison under any circumstances.
