Loretta from neptune Beach posted a scenario of a thriving exclusively
nursed baby who had green watery stools. Oversuppy was discussed, etc.blood
in stool may be related to anal fissure. Explosive watery green (sometimes
fluorescent colored) stools are seen with lactose malabsorption. My healthy
son had a brief viral infection treated with antibiotics. 3 weeks later
positive guiac (blood in stool). no fissure. Peds said it was my diet. I
went off all dairy for 2 weeks. No change. Went to pediatric GI.
sigmoidoscopy revealed lymphoid hypertrophy. The brush border in his lower
intestines were damaged. Thus unable to absorb lactose since the lactase
enzyme was decreased from the damaged brush border. No eosinophils noted on
biopsy (no allergic response). The specialist said she sees it alot where
the intestinal brush border is damaged with resulting lactose
malabsorption. That is why you see the explosive green stools from very
rapid transit. the blood was from the damaged areas in the intestine. the
cause - from the viral infection but I wonder what the antibiotics did too.
The treatment - nothing. Just time. It took almost 6 weeks to get his
stools back to the yellow bf stools. He always was nursed. Never formula.
If I had not persisted with the specialist but listened to the ped dr, I
would've had him on a hypoallergenic formula and weaned per his wishes. I
wasn't an oversupply mom, and mostly nursed one-sided anyway. He was
thriving. this is all very important when you are ruling out
problems.Loretta, hope this helps.
