Dear Lactnetters,
I'm new at both lactnetting and e-mail...here goes!...
Eons ago I got a master's in biology and taught a few years at the college
level. My bf babies are now two wonderful people in their twenties. IBCLC, 1985,
mentored, fortunately, by Susan Meintz Maher. Have returned to graduate school
in human nutrition at Michigan State University. Intended to write my thesis
working on physician education re bf but have become interested in the
question of the effect of labor meds on the initiation of bf. Bf is not only my
passion, but after many hours in the library, etc, my commitment is based on
sound science as well. I'm grateful for the richness and goodness of this topic.

My question: I, and other LCs I have asked, have learned to tell moms to
drink to thirst, that drinking too much can actually decrease milk production.
Somehow ADH (antidiuretic hormone) is involved, according to what we were told.
Does anyone have any info on this?...references, theory of mechanism? Any input
would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance...

Sue Davis, Scm, IBCLC
