Please, please, do not be arguing that these new growth standards are 'more
applicable to a breastfed baby'. They are growth standards. They describe
physiologic (normal) infant growth. Growth patterns that deviate
significantly from these patterns - however the infant is fed - warrant
investigation. The standards are applicable to formula fed infants and to
breastfed infants. This is an account of what Cuthberto Garza (who was part
of the team that developed the new standards) said,
"With the WHO curves, more babies and young children in the United States
inparticular fall into an overweight category, compared with the CDC growth
chart, possibly because a smaller percentage of U.S. babies are breast-fed,
and breast-fed babies tend to be leaner than formula-fed babies. This does
not diminish the relevance of the growth curves in the United States,
according to Dr. Garza. Rather, "it highlights the fact that breast-feeding
is an important early risk reduction factor." OB.GYN. NEWS . November 1.
