Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences about the IBCLC credential. I
have over 20 years experience as a LLL Leader and am now a Breastfeeding
Counselor with Breastfeeding USA. I have a PhD in Biology and have taken much of
the required coursework, but well over five years ago. I was formerly certified
as an IBCLC in 2000 but was unable to find paid work in my area, as only RNs
were being hired in the local hospitals and I did not want to do private
practice work.

I too feel eliminated from the possibility of becoming an IBCLC again,as I
would basically need to start from scratch. The expense and time would be too
great, without any hope of getting a paid job in the lactation field. I suppose
I have made peace with helping mothers as a volunteer, but I think it is a
shame that so many talented women won't be able to become IBCLCs.

I would like to know about the history of how and why the decision to change the
credentials was made. Can anyone give some of the background? Was there a
financial motive?

Thanks,

Beth Lichy
