I actually have no problem whatsoever with the second round of wording in
the hospital's statement on breastfeeding. I do think mothers should be
supported, whatever they choose in terms of feeding their babies. It's what
happens BEFORE she makes the choice that is where our efforts should be
focused. Make sure the mother knows the consequences of the different
choices she might make -- breastfeeding for long time, breastfeeding for a
short time, mixed feeding, formula from the beginning. Consequences in
terms of her baby's short-term health (as an infant) and in terms of her
baby's long-term health (throughout adulthood) and in terms of her baby's
cognitive development (loss of 5-8 or more IQ points if she doesn't
breastfeed at all), and in terms of her own health (breast cancer risk and
osteoporosis risk) and so on and so forth. If a mother fully comprehends
the consequences of the choice she is making, she should be fully supported
in her choice to breastfeed (by her parents, in-laws, husband, friends,
co-workers, neighbors, friends, etc.), or in her choice to bottle-feed.

If I remember, I'll post the conclusion to my "Guilt" talk to LactNet. It's
at home, and I'm at work, at my "day job."
