 I work at a hospital that is very quick to supplement babies with formula when blood sugars are lower than 45. Is there any evidence that increasing volume of formula given will raise baby's blood sugar more quickly? Instead of appropriate amounts for newborns, the protocol is to give a large bolus to the baby. We all know what that does to breastfeeding. I'm looking for any evidence on whether the volume given has a greater effect on raising blood sugar levels vs. the normal biological amounts of colostrum these babies would get at breast.
