In my 8 years as the lacation consultant at Mayo there has been an increase in
the number of moms working and pumping. We deliver about 1800-1900 babies/yr.
The breastfeeding rates have gone from 69% to 75.3% last year. When I started
we had no rentals and one pump station for working moms. Now we own 80 pumps to
rent and are renting another 6 to keep up.There are 6 in the Mayo syst free for
moms to use. There is a pump at IBM for employees. Most rentals go to moms who
work-next NICU babies and some for fixes etc. I think instruction for the moms
helps-being available to help work out any problems they have has helped.I
learn so much from them. Had a mom help organize a Breastfeeding Workings
Mom's Support group meeting once a month. The moms came up with a guide for
the caretakers--key is to feed the amount of milk a mom pumps to the baby next
day.Frozen milk is a backup for "bad or low supply day". Don't feed the baby
any more than the mother pumps. Try to keep the balance in amounts the baby
gets when mom is nursing at home.. Moms seem to pump out about what the baby
would be taking if nursing. Different moms pump different amounts ranging
from 7 to 16 oz per 8 hours for example. I recomend a double pump for any mor
e than 4 hour absence or more than 2 8 hour days The new PNS that moms buy doe
s work altho the comments are that it takes 15 min to pump when it used to take
10 with the rental. The rep told me that this pump was not for pumping for NICU
babies where one is building and maintaning a supply in absence of a baby
nursing vigorously. I always suggest a rental for that.
Sorry this got so long.
