BFing in the first hour after C/S? I hear this phrase, too, along with my
other least favorite: "that's a challenge".
--------------
Well, during the past year, we've been pushing a goal we call "Successful
Breastfeeding Begins at Birth." We've gone from about 65% of our babies
breastfeeding within the first hour to 85%. When we separate out the vag
deliveries fromt he sections, we have a vag. rate about 94% but our section
rate is around 60%. (This is a clean number with sick babies or mom's who
refuse taken out of the picture.)

My idea is to have the nursery nurse who goes to the delivery, bring the
assessment form and vitamin K with her. While the mom is being stitched,
the vitals, Vitamin K and assessment can all be completed. Both mom and
baby go to recovery together. Baby goes to breast, nursery RN leaves and
Recovery RN stays to monitor.

Nursery manager says having a nurse gone from nursery too long can pose a
problem. Labor manager says RN in recovery room needs to care for mom only
and can't have two patients.

Their baby step idea? The nurses need to work together and work it out for
each case according to what is going on in each unit. (Vague and
unrealistic.)

I suggested we find out what other hospitals across the nation are doing to
succeed AND meet standards. I was told that other hospitals are not doing
this either. This is why I want to get some suggestions. I realize there
are more that do not do this than do, but I know it can be done!

Thanks,
Billie Frye
