 Scientist discovers "hunter-gatherer" gene to explain fat mothers
 The Times reports that scientists have discovered why some mothers regain
their figures and some remain overweight after giving birth. Women with the
"825T" gene are on average heavily overweight in the year after giving
birth. Those who do not carry the gene spring back to their slimmer,
pre-pregnant shape. Professor Winfried Siffert of the University of Essen,
Germany said that the gene might have been beneficial in hunter-gatherer
societies, in that "prevention of post-pregnancy weight loss increased the
breast-feeding capability of the mother." He said it was designed for times
when food was scarce. The study is published in the Lancet.
