Naturally one would'nt say breastfed babies can't have water after 6 months but I was concerned it was being suggested as a necessary quantity & scheduled part of the babys diet.


While juices are not being routinely reccomended there was concern about poor dental health in a population that give their children juices & softdrinks readily . Giving water is seen as a way of counteracting this and rising constipation problems in babies.

I was sure there was no research to back up the HP ( Child & Families Health Nurse / manager ) statement so wanted to confirm my gut response to the statement wasn't over reacting & that there was no evidence for this in terms of constipation and dental caries. 


As far as I'm concerned this advice can not be given to mothers if there is no proof of benefit and potential risk of harm to infant nutrition, mothers milk supply etc. Really appreciate being able to check my perspective.
