Thank you to everyone who has responded. My initial reaction was the
same as most of yours: "Why Soy?"

But I am trying hard in my counseling to answer the first questions
first, before i dump a lot of un-expected information in a non-client's lap!
The woman is working with a lactation consultant and called me because I
run a shop where I sell breastpumps, SNS, etc...
She did not ask me for advice on which formula is best, or whether to
use formula at all, but only where to find organic soy formula.
My hope is that in offering to find out for her, she will call me again,
when less upset, and I will be able to find out more about the situation
and pass on some other information.

When someone walks into my shop and asks for a nipple shield, the
reaction of my heart is "NO! Don't go there! What's the problem, you
poor woman, are your nipples so sore? Is your baby not latching? Let me
show you how!" But If I do that, I'll scare her off. So I find her the
nipple shield, I discuss what size she wants, I coo about the cute baby,
I ask which midwife or doc or LC or BF Counselor she's working with, I
express sympathy about her sore nipples and see where that leads me.

My new motto: Finish the first breast first and answer the first
questions first.
