I have been using the California WIC Peer Counselor Training Manual
(http://www.wicworks.ca.gov/breastfeeding/peerCounselorManual.htm)to teach
volunteer members (men and women) of various African American Churches in
our county as part of a project to reduce AA infant illness and mortality:

The men really enjoy the activities (balloons, create an ad, write a song),
participated in the counseling practices (though they reported it wasn't
"them" but they got pretty good at open-ended questions and offering support
before providing education) and they took great pride in earning their
certificates!  

Of course as the instructor you would need to re-phrase some of the
activities and questions, but don't we all?
