Please believe me that I'm not trying to be argumentative, but I have to
differ about blood in stool being linked to bleeding nipples. Once blood
passes through the stomach (even a baby's weak stomach acid) and upper
intestines, any blood from the nipples has been turned deep brown. There
have been many references to this in the archives.
Cow milk protein allergy (either direct through formula and/or through
mom's milk) is the number one cause (followed by soy, believe it or not) of
intestinal bleeding. The problem with elimination diets is that moms aren't
fully educated about the sources of cow milk contaminants: casein, whey,
milk solids, butter fat, and even lactose (which is actually milk sugar, but
since it's derived from cow, it too along with the other non-protein
constituents, all can cause or trigger the allergic reaction). If the mom
wants to try an elimination diet, I recommend Dr. Dorris Rapp's books.
Ironically, cow milk formula can (and is often) actually cause anemia
because of this intestinal bleeding. I have posted the citations on this
topic before (maybe try 1999).
Another likely cause was suggested earlier, is iron--either through
TriViFlor with iron vitamins or through Art. Baby Milks with iron.
I also agree that nursing more often, with lots of skin to skin contact
and breast compression are the likely answers to so many of our issues.
Warmly,
Chris
