Hi,

     I saw a 12 day old baby today who apparently has never latched.  LC at
the hospital told the mom he was tongue sucking and curling his tongue back.
He started receiving bottles in the hospital.  Mom has persisted in pumping and
has a fairly good supply for him now but is worried if pumping will suffice
as he gets older.
She wants to breastfeed.  I checked his tongue and mouth.  I didnt see a
tongue-tie but neither did he ever stick his tongue out of his mouth.  He has a
good suck but his tongue does curl back. I was not able to get him to latch
despite repeated attempts and corrections for positioning .  Mom fally gave him a
bottle of EBM. I suggested  a tongue exercise to be doe before each feed and
attempted latch; also cup feeding as an alternative to draw out his tongue.
I'll be checking in with her in a few days, any further suggestions?  I'm brand
new as an IBCLC and this is a mom who want to nurse (as opposed to just
thinking its a great idea but is not worth the trouble)   Thanks,   Sara in NJ
