Hi Kathleen,
I don't worry about clicking when it is not associated with pain, but you
describe vertical creasing of nipple tip and pain, which is occurring with
mom with large breasts and baby with small mouth. This indicates a very
shallow, nipple latch. The dropping of the tongue is what makes a click.
If the mouth is full of breast, you cant drop the tongue. However, if there
is a real mis-match between size of nipple/mouth, you may have a "fit"
problem which can be hard to fix. You often just have to wait until the
baby gets a bit bigger. I'd work with the latch -- try to get the nose
tipped away, chin dug in, and get the baby to "root up" so the mouth is open
wide during latching.
