I was a certified HBOTB Instructor, and became an IBCLC after that.
I have found that the 5 S's can be useful, but that mothers need good
instruction regarding some other issues along with it. It's hard to know if this
research means the 5 S's are not effective, or if it means that the parents need
more instruction than just watching the video, thus causing too many unknown
variables. Here are my thoughts on the matter:

 1. Mothers need hands on practice and return demonstration of the 5 S's on a
one-on-one basis.

 2. Mothers need to be taught feeding and satiation cues. It seems that when a
mother learns the 5 S's, and does not learn about feeding cues, that newborns
may not be fed as often as they need to be fed, instead, they are swaddled.

 3. Thirdly, I teach my mothers that their babies need skin-to-skin, and what
the amazing benefits of STS are. Swaddling can interfere with that if it is
used all the time. So, I tell them to make sure the baby is not showing feeding
cues, make sure they get skin-to-skin, and when all of that has happened, then
swaddling is useful, helpful, and beneficial.

I wonder how this study would turn out if all of the above ideas were
implemented as a part of it?

(I posted this earlier, but don't know my way around Lactnet well, and forgot to put a Subject)
