Under "Dr Makinen" you find "History,Safety, and Dental Properties of Xylitol".

Xylitol is a sugar which you get e.g. from birch tree, also some
fruits contain xylitol. Xylitol has been found to reduce otitis media
and cavities (if child uses it, but results are even better if also
mom uses it). Xylitol gum has been sold here in Finland since 1975,
and there are also chocolates and hard candy drops sweetened with
xylitol. After a meal, the 'acidity' in the mouth rises, which is bad
for the teeth, and xylitol stops the acidity from rising, and makes it
go down to the normal level a lot faster.

The only drawback I can think of is that it has laxative effect if
consumed "too much", smaller amounts may cause gas to sensitive
individuals.

My both children got their first xylitol gums at about 9 - 10 months
of age, and pretty soon both understood what to do with them ;) .

I hope you will find answers to your questions from that pages :)
