Hi Rob,
Look at this child's swallowing.  If the baby is having a hard time with
flow or handling a bolus of milk in the mouth, he/she might behave the
way you describe, and may develop reflux from the swallowing disorder.
The rocking can make the baby calmer when the milk flow is difficult to
handle.  It was one of the things we recommend for "overactive MER",
which sometimes is really "baby can't hold the milk in his mouth long
enough to  produce a controlled swallow".  Look for tongue tie, recessed
chin, anything which may affect tongue grooving to hold a bolus.
        Have you ever read Wolf and Glass' text "Feeding and Swallowing
Disorders in Infancy"?  It's available from Therapy Skill Builders, a
subsidiary of the Psychological Corporation.  They have extensive info
on swallowing difficulties and their management.
