Kate asked what we say to patients who claim "they don't have milk yet." I
have always hated the term "milk comes in" and always refute that in
breastfeeding classes. But not everyone takes the class, right?
I tell them that their body has been making milk since the third trimester
of pregnancy and it is called colostrum (explain why it is not white if they
care) and as the baby removes the colostrum from the breast by nursing, the
body gets "signals" to continue making milk. It will change colors and increase
in quantity in the next few days. I explain how it feels when the milk
increases (sometimes it is called engorgement because.....) and how it is easier
to cope with if baby is nursing frequently.
I recall someone that I know calls colostrum the first milk - and the milk
increase "the second milk."
