Going back to lurkdom. I was only trying to help, but since I am not a
lactation consultant I really am not qualified.

Subject: blood in stools

Valerie made some excellent points regarding allergies and how more than one
food may be the culprit. Eliminating the common ones seems the best place to
start --anyone have a research-based list of the most common human food
allergens?? I know we say dairy is up there at the top, and soy is also, but
are there any references for making these statements??

Also, wouldn't blood from nipple trauma be digested by the baby, appearing
as
melena or black, tarry stools or streaks, rather than bright red?? Bright
red
in the stool usually results from a site lower down the intestinal tract,
such as would result from trauma to the small intestine, maybe due to
allergy....always suspect/rule out a fissure in a baby with red blood in the
stool as well.
