Karleen,
You wrote, "I wonder if you have considered writing a paper or two on the
subject of the theft of breastmilk components by biotechology companies..."

I have written a position paper for AnotherLook called "Patents,
Breastfeeding, and HIV that maybe accessed at http://www.anotherlook.org

I would highly recommend this website to anyone interested in taking "another
look" at the issue of HIV/AIDS and breastfeeding. There are a number of
other position papers by other Lactnetters on this list such as Pamela Morrison,
Magda Sachs. One can access some power point presentations made at the LLLI
Conference in San Francisco this past year. One presentation is by Anna
Coutsoudis. And one that I found most interesting was by Miles Cloyd called
"Detecting Infectious HIV in Human Milk." One of his slides is on "Problems with
studies attempting to detect infectious HIV in human milk." He states the storage
of milk samples is one of the problems. This was part of my critique of a
Semba et al paper in a letter to the editor in the JHL a few years ago. The milk
had been stored for 2 years--years not months. Factors in human milk
inactivate HIV and there are various researchers who believe that freezing increases
the inactivation. Thus I believe one has to seriously question the Semba et
al. studies in which 2 year old frozen breastmilk was used.

I am always interested in collaborating with others in the writing of papers.
But it would certainly depend on the topic and whether I had time.
Valerie W. McClain, IBCLC
