One of our postpartum moms, postop C/S day 2, complained of midsternal
chest pain. Included in her workup was a ventilation/perfusion (VQ) scan to
rule out a pulmonary embolus, which required her to receive radioactive dye,
technetium 99.

We decided to advise the mom to pump and dump for 48 hours, based on
references from Briggs, Riordan and Auerbach, and Lawrence. While in nuclear
medicine, the tech told the mother she cannot hold her baby for 24 hours.

Unfortunately, the mother decided to give up breastfeeding that night
after discussing this with her husband. Maybe we can encourage her more
tomorrow.
All tests were negative for cardiac or pulmonary complications.

My question is, have any of you come across any references for advising
a mother not to hold her infant after receiving diagnostic dye?

                                   Thanks very much,
