As the mother of a colicky first baby, I must come to Kitty's defense here.
Her statement does say that nothing "ever" works ALWAYS or NEVER. With my
first son, who cried virtually nonstop (even at breast) for 6 or more hours
every evening, there came many times when the only thing I could do (alone,
with husband at work late, mother who was dysfunctional, & friends who weren't
able to help out in the evening) was to put the baby down in a swing (10
minutes without crying!) or his crib--out of earshot--until I could regroup.
My husband is a therapist with abusive/neglectful families, & for the first
time I had some insight as to how someone could hurt their crying baby.
Carrying him around (still screaming!) was NOT an option.

Hindsight shows I also had moderate postpartum depression, & had lost all my
own skills at coping. My pediatrician's only advice was to "sit by the
crib/hold the baby/cry along with him" until he outgrew it. I allowed as how
ONE of us wouldn't be around 3 months down the road! Finally, I did discover,
on my own, that cutting out the milk products did the trick. But the 7 days
before things cleared my system were still like an eternity. Sometimes we
need to give parents a whole repertoire of things that work, even if "we"
didn't need them, and empower them to find what works for them, even if it
means "compromising" by using carriers and pacifiers.

By the way, the only way we could get my second son to suckle correctly, & not
suck on his tongue, was by keeping one of those infernal R--s pacifiers in his
mouth between nursings. Sometimes I think God gave me both these kids just to
teach me that no way is ALWAYS the right way...

Happy Holidays to all, whatever you choose to celebrate! Again, NO way is the
ONLY way!

a WET Christmas"!)
