I'm having a rather frustrating encounter with a mother.
I was originally called to her home for a tremendous crack in the
right nipple. I got there and pretty much had the whole thing
figured out. Pretty run of the mill I thought (I can get a little
cocky). Fixed the latch, no problem, mom in good spirits, baby (3
weeks old) doing lovely, gaining wetting, a little fussy but nice.)
Mom called the next day. Felt that she was having trouble doing what
I had reccomneded and wanted me to come and watch her latch the baby
to make sure all was well. I went. All was well. Crack was
hugely improved in 24hrs. Babe a little more content, mom still
practicing the new moves, but really getting it. Off I go.
The next day, another phone call from mom. Wants another check.
Isn't sure things are well. We talk it through this time. go over
the positioning again, chat about how things are improving. and off
she goes. Calls this morning, everything ducky. We talk about how
much the baby has gained (a pound in a week thank you very much) the
crack is slowly gettin better, there is no pain, and the latching on
gets better every time she does it. HOORAY! NOT SO FAST!
Mom calls this evening. She's had it. Wants another visit
tomorrow. I ask her what she would like me to fix. She bursts into
tears and says that she just feels that this is going badly, the
baby's been asleep for 3 hours, and that she can't get over the
hurdle. We chatted for a while, I told her to take a nap and that
I would see her tomorrow. What now?
The latch is good. The suck is good. The nipple is good. There is
no pain. The baby isn't fussing. The gain is good. I don't believe
she's depressed, and this is her third baby...all breastfed for
at least a year. I have no idea what I'm going to do for her.
What is the problem here? Ideas? Suggestions?
I'm finding this really frustrating.

Thanks wise ones.
