i posted about paget's disease not too long ago, and mentioned an article in
a new journal issue, can't recall what it is, but if you search the archives
for it, it is well worth looking at the article at a library. there are good
color photos, which i think are very important to look at. i asked dr. newman
if he had ever seen a mother who turned out to have paget's disease and he
said no, not in twenty years. but it is still a remote possibility that we
will see this sometime. of course breastfeeding women can get it, and it is
part of our responsibilities to at least know about it.

my feeling about this is that if a mother has some kind of skin problem and
it does not resolve with treatment for either thrush or eczema (or with the
APNO first), i refer her to a dermatologist and tell the dermatologist to do
a workup that includes assessing for that (this has only happened once so
far).

it is a real tragedy that so many problems are blamed on breastfeeding that
are unrelated, and that so many problems mothers have that they need help
with are ignored "until you wean." sometimes they can be deadly, and this
letter reminds us that sometimes it isn't just about beautiful babies and
doting parents.
