My name is Peggy Ventura an IVY Tech nursing student from Indianapolis,
Indiana.
It does appear that we are taking up a great deal of time and space here.
However in my search of the archives I found that this is not an uncommon
assignment for students.

We are only second semester nursing students so the depth of coverage in our
courses is limited.

Some of us have also not yet had any clinical experience with new mothers.

I have personal experience with breastfeeding as several of us do. But our
personal experiences are individual and we are seeking a broader
understanding that includes the global community. Cultures vary from town to
town, state to state, country to country.

The World Health Organization has issued the Baby-Friendly Hospital
Initiative that actually accredits hospitals here in the USA and worldwide.
This is not news to you but it is to new mothers around here.

According to a study cited and adapted by "Science Daily" ..."only56
hospitals and birth centers in the US follow the BFHI..."(Blackwell
Publishing August 30, 2007)accessed September 16, 2007 from http://www.
sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/08/070828154929.htm

How many worldwide do?

My second question regards recommendation number 8. in 'The Ten Steps to
Successful Breastfeeding" accessed from
http://www.who.int/nutrition/topics/infantfeeding_recommendation/en/index.html

It reads."8. Encourage breastfeeding on demand."
What methods do you employ to help mothers understand how to identify this
demand in the neonate? When mothers are only in the hospital setting for 48
hours postpartum how do you help establish this relationship?

As lactation specialists do you do home visits or do moms come to you? I am
aware that this could be different in different countries or regions. But
since the WHO recommendations are to encourage breast feeding worldwide, I
want to know about approaches used in other parts of the world from middle
class suburbs in the US and the UK to third world, and war torn areas.
