I hope I'm not sticking my neck out here but I used a nipple shield today to
help a mom who has a baby with a short frenulum. Her nipples were cracked and
bleeding in less than 18 hours of nursing. She with me the story of "trying to
nurse" her 4 year old with very similar results. Sore bleeding nipples with a
hungry baby, mastitis at two weeks, a real horror story. She also tells me
her brother and sister both had their frenulum clipped as small children along
with extensive dental work and braces. Both parents are all in favor of a
clipping if that will help the baby nurse. I showed them some pictures and printed
out some information from various websites.

Does anyone have a care plan that helps this sort of case? It may be a few
days until we can get some help. I've got her following our nipple shield care
plan which includes pumping after feedings. This lady is a trouper and is
sincerely grateful that I had the information she needed. (One of the nurses gave
her lanolin for her "sore" nipples but mom demanded to be seen by an LC.)
Thank you,
