I got a call today from the mother of five little boys. #5 is a week
old, born at 36wks, induction for pre-eclampsia. Nursing is pretty good
(getting CST which helps a lot--occiput is pretty messed up), and weight
gain is fine, but baby doesn't poop. He is seven days old and just
passed his first transitional poop today. The kicker is that every one
of the five babies has pooped every four or five days FROM BIRTH. The
only reason it is even an issue with #5 is because his bilirubin was 23
at 3 days pp.

We talked about breast compression and super switching to make sure he
gets what she has, but from all her description, he is nursing fine.
All the babies have been skinny, and their dad is 6', 150lbs.

I can't help thinking that this isn't a normal case of everybody in the
family being skinny--with the poop issue, it seems like it is more of
an illness that runs in the family. Is this description consistent
with anything in particular that she ought to be looking out for?
