Michael Murray has written a book on 5-HTP that I would recommend to her. He is an extremely well-respected naturopath and according to him 5-HTP has achieved excellent results in treating depression, fibromyalgia and obesity. IMO, women have the right to persue holistic treatments for anything at all. There is no reason to believe that drugs are more effective in treating depression than holistic measures. It is very American to rely so heavily on drugs and many of the herbs and supplements American HCP's are so afraid of have a long history of safety and efficacy elsewhere in the world, including Europe, where limited access to drugs would not be the reason for making other choices. If there is a good naturopath in her area, I would refer her to him/her as well.
