Yes indeed there is evidence for the Baby Friendly practices.
LactNetters may want to know that WHO has put out a new publication,
Evidence for the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, document number
WHO/CHD/98.9, 110 pages of very useful summaries, tables, and
ready-to-copy transparency pages, written by Drs. Constanza Vallenas and
Felicity Savage.  I have found it very helpful already in advocating for
practices that diverge from what is customary, and especially with
doctors as they cannot but respect the source. Can be ordered from WHO
Division of Child Health and Development at fax 41 22 791 4853; I don't
know the price but know it is sold at cost.  It also specifically says
that one can produce photocopies, if not for sale, so one copy could
provide a whole group of LCs with useful photocopied material.
