Happy story to tell.
I have a mom who had troubles with nursing her first child, but was really
determined. You see she only had one breast to work with because she lost
her other breast to breast cancer. First baby had latch problems and really
tore up her nipple. I didn't see her baby as a patient until his 2 month
well check and actually had to pry the information out of her because she
thought I'd tell her to stop breastfeeding. [She was so relieved to find
that wasn't the case]. We fixed the latch and healed the nipple and she went
on to breastfeed him for 18 months.

Saturday she had baby #2 at exactly 37 weeks. It was a precipitous delivery
[8 minutes of pushing] and while baby was clinically well, she was your
typical sleepy baby and did no better than "fair" on latch. At 24 hours I
gave her my "early term baby" speech, and told her "my daughter is in 4th
grade and if I gave her school work from 3 weeks ahead, she would find it
hard too - some of it she'd be able to do, but some of it she wouldn't and
I'd just have to work extra with her and give extra time to learn how to do
it". "And look at it this way, my daughter is a 4th grader - but Abigail is
just a baby - she'll catch up if we give her time." I told her the best
thing to do was keep her skin to skin so she could practice as she wanted.

This morning I came in to evaluate the baby for discharge. Mom's milk had
come in over night and Abigail was nursing like a champion with a great
latch. Everybody went home happy - even the pediatrician!
