Thank you Dr. Wight for your response.

Sometimes it feels like MDs vs. LCs. No-one wins in that game. It goes against team-building and working together for the best interest of the patient.

Yes, IBCLCs know more than most MDs about breastfeeding. We're part of the team, the MD is the team leader. We report to the leader, just as does the Occupational therapist, Anesthetist, Physical therapist, the surgeon to the primary care doc, etc etc. We give our assessment; if we have credibility and history of good counsel, we are given more credence. We do need to prove to our local community and its' health care providers that we know what we're doing, and that our work is valuable. It does take time.

And yes, there are MDs (and others) who do not welcome our knowledge and skill. This is extremely frustrating!
What we can do is keep up the good fight; "the times, they are 'a changin' ".

Send the Hale books, send the articles, offer your services, use intelligent and evidence-based resources. It is worth it, it does matter, even if we don't get a thank-you card.
